Crooners seem to be all but obsolete in the modern music landscape, which is very sad but fortunately, it is making a comeback. Welcome to the stage, Crooners! A musical that takes the audience through the great American songbook, following three stylish British gentlemen performing the best-known big band hits of the twentieth century.

The trio of crooners is played by Jim Whitely, Phil Barley and Roman Marek and they work wonderfully together, enjoying the performance just as much as the audience. The second act sees them fly through some of our favourite big band hits from Sammy Davis Jnr, Dean Martin and Frank Sinatra. All three actors have great voices that work well when solo or blending together during strong harmony sections.

Of course, the unsung heroes of the spectacular Crooners performance are the musicians who share the stage with our three leads. Being only a small band doesn’t stop them from projecting the big band sound as though there were ten times more performers. The musicians match the energy of our leads perfectly, providing an authentic big band experience with just nine band members.

From the very start of the show, the audience is involved in the performance as the Crooners search for a partner to continue their dying line. This makes for lots of fun with audience members, participating in a large amount of the show. Our crooners handle the interaction perfectly and in good humour. The audience is more than welcome to sing along with every song and given their interest in the show they will more than likely know every last song on the setlist.

The stage design is simple but effective, featuring two gorgeous chandeliers that bring class and warmth to the affair while increasing the space on stage for our leads to really stretch their legs. This also allows for the tap performances to be extravagant, while remaining relaxed and effortless.

In this excellent throwback to the big band era that was a major part of American music history, Crooners offers an authentic experience of the days of old. The leads ooze charm in the same way you’d expect singers of the day to and each character manages to define himself from the others. Whether you’re a lover of the spectacular big band sound or simply enjoy a night filled with fun at the theatre, you are guaranteed have the time of your life.
