Halifax History: Lister Lane Cemetery by David C Glover

26th April 2017 By Liz Kenny in

Hello everyone

My name is David, and recently Liz Kenny asked if I’d contribute a column with an historical theme to the Skircoat Green Directory.

This time I’d like to tell you a little about Lister Lane Cemetery. Opened in late 1841, as Halifax General Cemetery, its name changed over the years.  The first Independent Cemetery in Halifax, it was created when churchyards and chapelyards were rapidly becoming overfilled.   Being formed before the advent of the Halifax Corporation (1848), it was not a municipal graveyard, and existed twenty years before Stoney Royd was opened. Having recognised a public need, some local men formed a committee to found a private enterprise, funded partly through a share issue.  The Crossleys of Dean Clough and the Whitleys were significant investors. The cemetery was never consecrated, and there was no distinction made between those of different Christian sects, so Catholics were interred alongside Baptists or Unitarians. Even in early days, atheists were buried there. Very democratic.

By 1900, the cemetery was nearly full, so few new graves were possible.  Those buried at Lister Lane thereafter were usually interred in graves already existing. The Cemetery Company was bankrupt by 1950, and the Council had to step in for its last few active years.  Well over 19,000 people had been buried there, and the last interment was in 1963. Thereafter the place fell into a neglected state. A 1980s clearance restored it for a while, but within ten years it was again a jungle, unsafe, with no gates, and a reputation for hidden crime.

Calderdale MBC still owned the site, but had no resources to maintain it, so in 1999 a Friends Group was formed in the local community, chiefly by Harriet Dell and Sheila Williams, to bring the place back from its poor condition, tidy it up, and promote it as a significant historical learning resource with Open Days and Tours.  I first became involved with The Friends of Lister Lane Cemetery a few years later.

Much was done by others before I arrived.   We are a registered public charity, and are run by means of an informal committee, where we have many laughs.  Nowadays, weather permitting, a group meets on Sunday mornings to carry out maintenance; often also on a Wednesday morning. Recently, the creation of an attractive large garden among the graves in the corner, by the Lister Lane gate, has worked wonders.  With assistance from grants, we have added information boards for visitors to read, planted suitable new trees and shrubs in strategic areas, and seen a new Friends’ leaflet produced.  We ‘rescued’ over 100 tombstones from Square Chapel, otherwise to have been lost; and have won awards from ‘Yorkshire in Bloom’ and achieved Significant Cemetery in Europe status in 2015.

A phenomenal task has been – and is being – achieved.  The Friends would love you to visit us, and think about joining us, even if you cannot help on site.  Have a look at our website (details below) to learn more, and feel free to contact our Secretary, and ask for our leaflet.

Please be aware that the Cemetery is kept locked except on certain days.  Normal opening hours are: Sundays, 9 am – 1 pm, and Wednesdays 10 am – 3.30 pm, weather permitting. The site may not be manned at all these times.

Our next Open Day with Tours will be on Saturday 29th April, from midday.  That day we shall welcome the Mayor of Calderdale and consort.  Conducted Tours will begin at 1 pm and last about 75 minutes each, and the first two will run contemporaneously:

B] 1pm – General Tour of the whole site by Stuart Wilkinson

C] 2.45pm – Second General Tour by David Glover

Readers Recipe – One Pot Moussaka by R. Edwards, Copley.

Ingredients (serves 4-5)

2 Red Onions (chopped)

3 Cloves of Garlic (finely chopped, grated or crushed)

500g Lamb Mince

2 Aubergines (cut into bite sized cubes)

2 Tsp Dried Oregano

2 Tsp Cinnamon

1 Bay Leaf

400g Chopped Tomatoes

2 Tbsp Tomato Puree

Pinch of salt

Oil (I used Rapeseed Oil)

200g Feta

Fresh Mint (chopped, approximately a handful)

Method

Heat a Tbsp of oil in a casserole dish (suitable for the hob) and gently fry the onions and garlic until soft (approx. 10 mins). Turn up the heat, add the lamb mince and fry until browned (approx. 5 mins)

Add the oregano, cinnamon, bay leaf and a pinch of salt, stir and then add the tinned tomatoes, tomato puree and 150ml of water. Simmer gently for around 15 mins, stirring occasionally.

Meanwhile place the aubergine cubes on a

baking tray, spray (or lightly brush) with oil and place in a hot oven or under the grill until nicely browned (turning to brown on all sides).

Add the aubergines to the mince, stir and    simmer for another 15 mins or until the sauce is lovely and thick. (This can be done slowly in the oven if preferred) Remove the bay leaf before serving.

To Serve: Sprinkle with the chopped mint and crumbled feta and serve on a bed of fresh

spinach with a big chunk of crusty bread or toasted pitta.

Spotlight On… John & Lesley Baldwin, Big 6 Landlord and Landlady, Savile Park

Spotlight On… John & Lesley Baldwin, Big 6 Landlord and Landlady, Savile Park

This month we caught up with John & Lesley who own and run The Big 6 Pub in Savile Park. John has worked there for over 30 years, with 22 years as Landlord, making him one of the Halifax’s longest serving landlords. They’ve sponsored football teams, fundraised for charities, run popular quiz nights for years and years! The Big 6, is thought to have been originally opened in 1852 by John Horsfall and opened as “The Bowling Green” in 1857. It became “The Big 6” in 1894 and the rest, as they say, is history!

What’s the best bit about your job?

When the atmosphere is buzzing and everyone is having a great time there is no better feeling. It sounds corny but our customers are the best thing, as they provide the variety and atmosphere that makes the pub as good as it is.

What do you enjoy doing when you’re not working?

We love walking our 7 year old Jack Russell, Marmite when we aren’t working. If we get a few days away, then we’ll go caravanning. John: A sport I’ve played for years and quite enjoy is Racquetball

What’s your favourite drink if you have one

John: If not beer, then a fine malt whiskey would be my choice

Favourite food

Lesley: We don’t have a set favourite, but John is a good cook. We are currently working our way through The Hairy Bikers Curry Book

Favourite local restaurant / pub and why

We really enjoy La Luna, they do a really good Steak & Chips and now know to hold the trimmings for John

What’s been your most proud moment or achievement

Personally, seeing all our four children grow up to be so wonderful, lovely and successful. Professionally it was being able to buy the pub from the Punch Group five years ago. John: I am also really proud of Lesley and everything she does. I honestly don’t think the pub would be here today if it weren’t for her (Surprise Lesley! She didn’t hear this part)

Favourite Book

Lesley: We both love crime novels. My favourite book at the minute is ‘Life After Life’ by Kate Atkinson.

John: The one I’m reading at the time! I think if I was forced to choose though it would Two brothers by Ben Elton

Desert Island Disc?

We both love Desert Island Discs and always listen to the podcast.

John: Roger Waters ‘In The Flesh’ is great

Lesley: Billy Joel ‘Scenes From An Italian Restaurant’ for me. In fact, we love it so much we are going to Billy Joel perform it at Madison Square Garden this year!

What’s at the top of your ‘must have’ experiences list still to do?

Travel. We definitely want to travel and will take the caravan across Europe making sure we stop in Italy. We’d also like to visit Australia… though we’ll leave the caravan at home for that trip!

What excites you most about Halifax at the moment?

John: While it easy to focus on the negative, Business rate increases for example, Halifax is going through a rejuvenation. Whether you look at the new micro-brewery and craft beer pubs opening or what’s happening at Dean Clough, it certainly looks good. The Piece Hall of course is what most people are anticipating, so it will be great to see it opening this year.

Spotlight On featuring Mark Sharp, Headteacher, All Saints Primary School, Skircoat Green, Halifax.

28th February 2017 By Liz Kenny in

Spotlight On featuring Mark Sharp, Headteacher, All Saints Primary School, Skircoat Green, Halifax.

This month we would like to introduce to you the new headteacher at All Saints Primary School.  Mr Sharp was kind enough to answer the questions in detail, so much detail we had to edit it down for the printed version of the magazine.  However, we have the opportunity to share the full article with readers here on the new Skircoat Green Directory website.  Please read on…

What’s the best bit about your job?

Quite simply put…it’s the children. They’re at the heart of every decision I make which is why I love to get back into the classroom as often as possible to escape some of the stresses of being a Head. I came into this profession 8 years ago to make a difference in society and to promote social justice within the community I served. I’ve always had a passion to improve myself and being a teacher enabled me to provide children with a plethora of experiences to make sure they could be the best version of themselves, too. Now as a Headteacher, I also enjoy developing the skills of the staff in my school. The Headteachers who I have worked for took chances on me and I will be forever grateful. It’s thanks to them that I am where I am now. I, too, hope to nurture my staff so that they can grow and achieve their own career goals as well as having the greatest impact on children’s lives.  The school’s motto is ‘Let it Shine!’ and I believe that this is reflective of the whole school community.

What do you enjoy doing when you’re not working?

It’s important to have a healthy work/ life balance. Once my school work is completed, I enjoy working out at the gym and have recently started swimming. Family and friends are very important to me so I also enjoy socialising with them and making memories. I am a proud uncle of 2 nieces and 2 nephews who I adore and spoil rotten. I enjoy eating out, watching the latest films at the cinema and relaxing on a beach in the summer.

What’s your favourite drink if you have one?

Ok. I’ll provide a sensible answer and an honest one! I drink cucumber water during the working week and relax with a Long Island Ice Tea when socialising with friends.

Favourite food

I like all types of food to be honest but the spicier the better!

Favourite local restaurant / pub and why?

I’d have to say Harrison Social in Halifax. Not only was it the venue for mine and my twin’s (Adam) fantastic 30th birthday party last June, the food is amazing, there’s a variety of drinks to try and the owner (Matthew) is very welcoming and knowledgeable. There’s a stylish and trendy feel to the place, too.

What’s been your most embarrassing / funny / proud / memorable experience?  (choose whichever most appropriate)

My proudest ‘adult’ moment to date would have to be receiving the call from the Chair of Governors, Sarah Killingback, telling me that I had successfully been appointed as the Headteacher at All Saints’. I was absolutely over the moon and felt so honoured to have been entrusted with children’s futures. The sense of accomplishment was unbelievable and it felt amazing telling all of my family and friends the news. They were all so proud and I’d like to thank them for supporting me on the journey (they know who they are!)

A favourite memory from my childhood was when I played Joseph in ‘Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat’ at St. Mary’s Catholic Primary School. It was the first time I dared to audition for such a role and I learnt to always ‘give things a go’ if I felt passionate about them. Seeing my proud parents and Grandad in the audience was a wonderful feeling that I’ll never forget. Taking risks is a quality I would like to instil in my children at All Saints’.

Favourite Book – why?

I don’t really have a favourite book. I’ve enjoyed reading children’s books to my class in the past but now I read for work purposes as opposed to pleasure. I’m currently reading ‘Outstanding Teaching – Engaging Learners’ by Andy Griffith and Mark Burns and I’m looking forward to sharing my findings in staff meetings over the year as we redesign our school curriculum.

Desert Island Disc?

A desert island deserves a relaxing soundtrack so it would have to be Celine Dion’s greatest hits! (And I’m proud to admit that!) My friends and I enjoyed seeing her live in Las Vegas as a part of my 30th celebrations. It was truly the best experience of my life! My friend Jennie and I have even paid a small fortune to see her on her UK tour later this year.

What’s at the top of your ‘must have’ experiences list still to do?

I love holidaying and visiting different parts of the world. I would love to spend Christmas and New Year in a private igloo shaped cabin under the Northern Lights in an Arctic resort. It would be magical.

What excites you most about at All Saints in the coming year?

I am extremely excited about the journey I am taking All Saints’ on. I am fortunate to have committed staff and governors, supportive parents and the best children – I am proud of each and every one of them. Within the next year, I will continue getting to know the children and their families, provide opportunities for them to develop their own talents and interests and revitalise the school’s bespoke curriculum to promote independent learning in an engaging and reflective environment.

Furthermore, every school should be at the heart of the community in which it serves, so I would like to improve links with the local businesses and services in the Skircoat area. If any businesses out there would like to form a link or complete a collaboration project, please get in touch with the school.

I welcome you all to be a part of All Saints’ future.

Readers Recipe Chicken Parmigiana by Ruth Edwards, Copley

ChickenParmigiana

This delicious, versatile and easy to make dish is perfect for a healthy family tea yet impressive enough to serve to guests. It is cheap to make, costing around £10 for a family of 5 (Ingredients bought from Lidl). The breadcrumbs can be made from leftover or stale baguette in advance and freeze really well and the sauce recipe can be doubled up ready to use in many other wonderful recipes like for homemade pizzas or simply as a tasty pasta sauce.

Ingredients (to serve 5)

For the Tomato Sauce:

2 Onions, chopped (red or white)

4 Cloves of Garlic, finely chopped

500g Passata

400g Chopped Tomatoes

Fresh Basil

1 tbsp Balsamic Vinegar

½ tsp Sugar

Pinch of Salt

Oil (I used Rapeseed Oil)

For the Chicken:

5 Chicken Breasts

200g Breadcrumbs (I made my own by putting half a stale baguette, 75 grams of parmesan and a handful of fresh basil in a food processor)

2 Eggs, beaten

250g Mozzarella, sliced

*see footnote for serving suggestions.

Method

  • Heat the oil in a pan and gently cook the onions and garlic until soft (approx. 10 mins) then add the passata, chopped tomatoes, salt, sugar and balsamic vinegar. Stir, cover and simmer for approximately 30 mins, stirring occasionally. Meanwhile make the breadcrumbs(see above for details)
  • Place the chicken breasts between 2 sheets of cling film and bash out with a rolling pin until roughly 5mm thick. Dip the chicken in the egg and then in the breadcrumbs making sure they are totally covered. Grill the chicken for a few minutes either side or until the breadcrumbs are crisp and brown.
  • Add a handful of fresh basil to the tomato sauce and blend until smooth (blending not essential). Transfer the sauce to an oven proof dish that is big enough for the chicken pieces. Place the chicken in the dish with the sauce and top with the sliced mozzarella. Cover with any remaining breadcrumbs and cook in a medium/high oven (200°c/Gas mark 6) for approximately 15-20 minutes or until the topping has browned and the chicken is cooked through.

*Serve with Pasta: Linguine, Spaghetti or Tagliatelle, potato wedges. Alternatively roast broccoli or courgetti would go perfectly if you are on a carb free diet.
